Then came a shorter woman, her skin smooth and pale in the dim ambient lighting, her features sculpted of smooth, gentle curves. Dark brown hair fell in slow waves about her shoulders, framing her face and shoulders, an elegant pin tucked neatly above her ear. Her expression could have been described as cool, if not for the faintest upturning of the corner of her mouth as she stared back up from the card with eyes the color of a stormy winter sky, and within them danced a dozen tricks unplayed. She lounged against the bar behind her, perched comfortably in her barstool as if she owned the place, a finely etched glass held loosely in one hand, a cigarette in the other, smoke hanging in the background. The loose sleeves of her pastel green blouse were pulled up casually, the neckline of which being provocative at best. A corset of rich brown accented her curves, a deliberate act to be sure, along with the high-rising slit in the material of her skirt, exposing a fair bit of leg as it rested over her other knee

Ciara

Daughter of Benedict
Lady of Amber
Lady of The Court of the Tides

Then there was Ciara. Tall and thin, with hazel eyes that were a warmer more playful version of Benedict’s. Gleaming black hair curled loosely over her shoulders, bangs swept to the side out of her eyes, and freckles sprinkled across her delicate nose. Her long athletic legs stretched out as she lounged on a padded garden bench, book in hand, the backdrop a riot of vibrant blooms. Knee-length black heeled boots encased her feet and her ankles were casually crossed in a relaxed manner. A masterfully crafted sword rested nearby on the ground, its polished hilt with a large sapphire in the pommel gleamed in the sunlight. She wore a cerulean blue silk blouse and black leggings, a lightweight matching jacket hung folded on the back of the bench.

Rogan

Lord of Amber
Fellow of the Royal Society
Forensic Analyst to the Crown of Amber
Engineer in Residence

A narrow face, pale, with a day or so of beard: the corners of his mouth deep-set, the curve of Cupid’s bow prominent. The green eyes were bright with widely separated brows, unshadowed and untroubled by much more than late nights and too much caffeine. His dark hair came short in back, longer over his forehead. In the picture he wore a long, white leather coat with large buttons up its left side, though I’d never seen him with it in person. The background was a laboratory that seemed to span several centuries of advances in the space of a few inches: an alembic on one side, a matter compiler on the right. I knew he’d a knack for the sciences and used them as a tool to investigate shadow. He had a propensity for put-down humor and self-confidence that often failed to endear him to his elders, but I liked him well enough.

All That Makes Us Human Continues, page 105

Shadows: A sparsely-populated region of shadow called the Land of the Falling Wall where he keeps a laboratory with large swaths of empty countryside in all directions.
Retainers: A quartet of drones: intelligent, sarcastic, floating suitcases who maintain the lab and its grounds. Their names are Chamlis-Amalknay (the oldest, wisest, and kindest), Skafen-Amtiskaw (the offensive drone, in both senses of the word), Flere-Imsaho (tiny birdwatcher; librarian and protocol), and Turminder-Xus (the rule-breaker and security maven).
